Using AMSOIL Synthetic Lubricants

Learn about the Benefits and proper use of AMSOIL Synthetic Diesel Engine Oils and Chassis Lubricants for your Duramax Diesel.

Specifically for the Duramax Diesel,

AMSOIL engineers and manufactures a fuel efficient 5W-30 Synthetic Heavy Duty Diesel Oil and 15W-40 Synthetic Heavy Duty Diesel Oil, both 25,000 miles or 1 year oils, that when used in conjunction with the AMSOIL EaO-52 Oil Filter that also is used for 1-year, 25,000 mile. That's right, 25,000 miles between oil changes or 1 year, whichever comes first! If you use oil analysis you can usually go longer than 25,000 miles. Other AMSOIL benefits include reduced sludge and deposit formation, extreme temperature protection, improved fuel efficiency and rust and corrosion prevention and it does not void any new vehicle warranty. AMSOIL Synthetic Lubricants meet and exceed all API rated and GM specifications.

Product Recommendations for Diesel Vehicles
There are new rules in affect beginning in the 2007 model year for all diesel applications.
Stricter EPA guidelines are now calling for a new specification on all diesel oils. The spec is classified as CJ-4 and it must be used in 2007 diesel engines or you will cause harm to your engine.

Amsoil’s recommendations are as follows:
For all 2007 and newer diesel vehicles the following oil must be used: DEO 5W-40 - This is Amsoil’s newest Synthetic Oil and meets the newest CJ-4 oil specifications. The use of any other oil in 2007 diesel equipment not meeting CJ-4 will cause harm to your engine and in particular the DPM filter. DPM stands for Diesel Particulate Matter and is a highly sophisticated filter designed to clean the exhaust gases before it enters the atmosphere. This filter can become severely clogged if the wrong oil is used in your engine.

Below are the correct oil filters to order per Diesel Engines:

  • Chevy Duramax – EaO-52
  • Dodge Cummins – EaO-80 or Donaldson ELF-7349
  • Ford Power Stroke 7.3L – EaO-99
  • Ford Power Stroke 6.0L – EaO-88

If you own a 2006 or older diesel  Use approved API CI-4 + diesel oil. For 2006 model year and older you may use either one of the following full Synthetic Oil’s.

HDD 5W-30-
This is the oil that I use in my 2005 GMC Duramax. I presently have a BMK16Ea By-Pass Oil Filter mounted on my truck which allows me to extend my drain intervals beyond 25,000-miles.

AME 15W-40
- This is Amsoil’s top selling oil overall. You can use this in any gasoline or diesel engine (previous to 2007 models.) AME is an excellent all purpose synthetic fleet oil that will typically meet most of your fleets demands.

ACD 10W-30/SAE 30
- This lubricant can be used where a 10W-30 or straight 30 weight is desired. This is very good economical choice and like Amsoil’s 15W-40 synthetic oil is an excellent fleet lubricant.

Another option is to install a AMSOIL Dual Remote By-Pass Filtration System. With this system you only change your oil when oil analysis indicates. Change the EAO full flow at 25,000 miles and the EaOBP bypass at 50,000 or every other time you change the full flow filter. The AMSOIL Synthetic lubricants don't break down like conventional petroleum based motor oils, is much more shear stable and does not have the waxes, paraffin's and by-products.

The by-pass filter removes the particles that cause wear in your engine down to less than one micron (a micron equals 0.001 mm) and keeps the engine oil analytically clean so you do not need to change your oil for a long time, while still getting far better protection than someone that changes their oil every 3000 miles.

The AMSOIL Synthetic Oil does not break down like conventional petroleum based motor oils, is much more shear stable and does not have the waxes, paraffin's and by-products that come out of crude oil that is pumped from the earth.

The by-pass filter removes the particles that cause wear in your engine down to less than one micron (a micron equals 0.001 mm) and keeps the engine oil analytically clean so you do not need to change your oil for a long time, while still getting far better protection than someone that changes every 3000 miles.

AMSOIL Synthetic Lubricants meet and exceed all API rated and GM specifications.

Analysis provides a big return for your small investment by extending equipment life by preventing premature component failure, reducing maintenance costs by eliminating unnecessary component changes and a decrease in downtime due to premature scheduled maintenance as well enabling calculation of optimum drain intervals that will reduce lubricant costs and assure maximum equipment protection.

If you choose not to install the Dual Remote by-pass filtration system then the AMSOIL EAO full flow engine filter would be of a significant benefit to the long term durability of your engine as well as allowing for 25,000 miles of service on the filter.

AMSOIL has a complete line of synthetic motor oils, greases, transmission fluids, gear lubes, Two-Stage foam air filters, by-pass and full flow filters and filtration systems designed to extend the life of your vehicles and equipment and save you time and money. In addition we also offer a preferred customer wholesale purchase option, retail purchase option or commercial account purchase option for businesses. We also offer a Dealership Option for anyone interested in becoming an AMSOIL Dealer and/or purchasing products at wholesale cost.

You've spent your hard earned money on the Duramax Diesel option in one of the most popular and well engineered trucks there is, now don't you think you owe it to yourself to use the very best oil in it? And don't let your local dealership service center tell you that you you have to use their brand of oil to "maintain your warranty". That is a 100% false statement by the dealership, yet it goes on day in and day out. We constantly receive calls from customers that were told this by their servicing dealership. This practice is not authorized or condoned by the auto manufacturers, but the fact is it still goes on.

How a servicing dealership can essentially tell a customer that they have to use a lower quality lubricant to "maintain their warranty" is not only wrong but it is also illegal unless they provide it free of charge. There are Federal laws that protect you against this.

In a recent Lubricants World Magazine interview the president of a major national quick lube chain (which is owned by a major petroleum oil company) states that if they can get customers to shorten their drain intervals by 100 miles it would mean an additional $20 million in revenue for the company per year and if they can get consumers to do one more oil change per year it would mean $294 million for the oil change alone and $441 million in revenue when they include ancillary products and services that go along with the oil change. In fact, the president of the quick lube chain openly admits that the bottom line is profits. The shorter the drain interval the more money the quick lube makes. It is our opinion that they would be more profitable by promoting and installing AMSOIL extended drain interval synthetic motor oil. It appears that the short drain interval petroleum oils they promote are good at assuring that customers will be back for another change in a relatively short period of time.

How to Reduce or Prevent Turbocharger Bearing Seizures on Duramax Diesels

One of the many specific areas, on turbocharged Duramax Diesel engines, that can clearly benefit from the use of synthetic oil is the turbocharger. When a turbocharged engine is shut off immediately after use, "heat soak" occurs due to the extremely high temperature still present in the turbocharger. Over a period of time this can lead to deposits that can reduce or block the oil flow to the turbocharger bearings which can lead to turbocharger bearing seizure.

AMSOIL's Synthetic Diesel Oils are inherently more thermally stable than many diesel oils on the market and have been shown to keep turbochargers considerably cleaner than other brands . While poor quality engine oils have been shown to cause turbocharger bearing seizure in under 100 hours during a "heat soak" test.

Many engine oils will survive the 100 hour "heat soak" test, but..., with considerable deposits and incipient oil passage blocking. If you use low quality diesel oils make sure you let the engine idle for a few minutes after use to allow the engine and turbocharger to cool. This does not eliminate deposit formation but it can reduce it.

ford_p1.jpg

Take a look at the varnish deposits in this picture. These are the results of a severe high temperature deposit test. This test clearly shows that AMSOIL keeps engines cleaner longer than other major brands diesel oils. Which oil would you rather have protecting your engine?

The bottom line: To prevent or eliminate turbocharger bearing seizure, there is no substitute for a high quality synthetic diesel oil (like AMSOIL's) as they have been have been proven to maintain turbochargers in an almost "as fitted" condition and significantly reduce deposit formation.

We are here to help you learn the facts and show you how you can use AMSOIL and get a superior product and also increase the performance and add to the longevity of your Duramax Diesel plus save time and money. Duramax Diesel trucks are excellent vehicles and exceptionally well engineered by General Motors. In our opinion they are one of the most advanced vehicles ever produced, however there are ways to make the performance and longevity even better with AMSOIL Synthetic Lubricants.

Simply changing your motor oil more often with a "reputable" oil will not give you all the benefits that AMSOIL offers:

You will not get improved fuel economy, you will not get reduced engine wear, you will not get reduced operating temperatures, you will not get extended drain intervals and you will not save money in the long run.

AMSOIL has been in business since 1972 and was the first company in the world to develop an API (Automotive Petroleum Institute) rated synthetic lubricant for automotive applications. They coined the phrase "extended drain intervals" 30 years ago and have been on the leading edge of technology and innovation ever since then.  We have many satisfied customers using AMSOIL products in both their commercial, trucking, fleet as well as personal, family and recreational vehicles.

AMSOIL Synthetic Diesel Oils Exceed Latest 2004 Diesel Engine Specifications

In October 2002, new Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) pollution regulations went into effect, calling for a 50 percent reduction in diesel emissions. In order to comply with the new regulations, most engine manufacturers introduced exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) engines, which recirculate a portion of the exhaust to the engine's combustion chamber to incinerate pollutants. Although EGR engines effectively reduce emissions, they also run hotter and introduce higher levels of soot and acid into the oil, leading to increased wear and increases in oil viscosity.

Although the time to run field tests on new EGR engines was limited, original equipment manufacturers and oil companies worked together to introduce the API CI-4 diesel oil specification in December 2001. The new specification was designed specifically to provide optimum protection for both EGR and older engines while maintaining previous drain intervals. Areas directly addressed with CI-4 included "corrosive and soot-related wear tendencies, piston deposits, degradation of low- and high-temperature viscometric properties due to soot accumulation, oxidative thickening, loss of oil consumption control, foaming, degradation of seal materials and viscosity loss due to shear."

In order to assure top performance in EGR-equipped engines, some equipment manufacturers released their own diesel oil performance specifications. In the two years since the October 2002 EPA deadline, manufacturers have collected considerable data on the performance of their engines, prompting many to tweak their specifications.

Mack released its stringent EO-N Premium Plus High Performance Diesel Engine Oil specification in the spring of 2002. However, according to Mack-Volvo powertrain staff engineer Greg Shank, it has since revised the specification due to soot-related oil thickening and shear that occurred after a certain length of highway time.

"The gear drives and the injection systems had changed and that created more shear than the older engines," says Shank. After developing a more stringent shear stability test, Mack issued its revised EO-N Premium Plus 03 specification in April 2003. In order to meet the revised Mack specification, many diesel oils had to be reformulated with a new dispersant system and modifications to the viscosity index modifier to ensure improved shear stability.

"As with previous Mack specifications, the EO-N Premium Plus 03 specification was aimed at identifying oils that provided extended drain capabilities in Mack engines beyond those provided by the current API CI-4 specification," says Gary Parsons, ChevronTexaco Global Lubricants commercial automotive business unit manager, North America.

Most recently, API has issued an upgrade to its CI-4 specification, CI-4 PLUS, and began licensing on September 1. It is expected to provide a higher level of protection for EGR engines through improved oxidation resistance, shear stability, acid neutralization and soot dispersancy. CI-4 PLUS certified diesel oils also meet most of the individual manufacturer-issued specifications and are backward compatible with older diesel oil specifications and engines. CI-4 PLUS oils must first meet the original requirements of CI-4, with the additional requirements of passing the 90-Pass Shear Stability Bench Test and the new Mack T-11 engine test, a more stringent upgrade of the Mack T-8E soot-viscosity test required for CI-4.

AMSOIL Synthetic Diesel Oils surpass the most stringent modern diesel oil specifications, including CI-4 PLUS and EO-N Premium Plus 03. Formulated with top-of-the-line synthetic base stocks and advanced additive packages, AMSOIL Synthetic Diesel Oils effectively control the increased soot and acid levels associated with EGR units, while remaining shear stable at high temperatures, avoiding the damaging sludge and deposit build-up that contribute to decreased fuel efficiency, corrosion and accelerated engine wear.
